Millicent Akoth
I got involved in Corner of Hope in 2010 after the post-election violence of 2007-2008. I went through an interview for training, and got selected. Training started immediately after the interview an at the same time I was with the children. This was a bit hard since I did not yet master all the presentations, but I had to do my best for the children. Since I was very interested, I worked a great deal on my materials and ensured that they were functional. We had two tents where our learning took place. This was a big challenge as the wind would blow our materials away which made it difficult to do classes. We also had to carry our materials to and from class daily, as it was not safe to leave them.

Children were excited about Montessori and loved it, since they enjoyed working with the materials. Most parents also appreciated the offered education, and were willing to let their children go to school.
I think my involvement in Corner of Hope has let to independent children with a wonderful foundation for life.
My time in Corner Of Hope has helped me to get to know much about child development. Before my introduction to Montessori, I did not know about the sensitive periods, the absorbent mind and the planes of development. I've come to learn that a prepared environment and adult are very important to a child's development. I enjoy working with the Montessori materials. My favourite materials are the sandpaper letters, as through them reading becomes easy.

Corner Of Hope has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Classes are now wonderful and the school is admired by many people. I think my involvement in Corner Of Hope has let to independent children with a wonderful foundation for life.
